Get Prepared for Spring Snow Geese

Because snows are in the midst of their long trek to the arctic breeding grounds, they fly in large numbers.  You may think you saw large flocks of snow geese if you have hunted with us in the fall.  In the spring, we typically count in the 10’s of thousands how many birds are in a flock.

20 Geese per day limit

With a generous per day limit of 20 Snow Geese there is plenty of shooting action to come on your hunt.  In the spring, the days are long with early mornings.  This means a light breakfast and a departure to the field usually before 4 am.

Decoys and more decoys

The flocks come into the area in seemingly endless waves.  The oldest adult birds tend to lead the way with the juvenile birds still sporting some grey feathers will bring up the tail end of the migration.  These birds have been educated all the way up the fly way so it is extremely important to have well hidden hunters and high quality decoy spreads to look like a feeding flock on the ground.  That usually means we bring out every white decoy we have.

Snow Geese and Ross’s Geese

Expect to have tremendous viewing opportunities of all the varieties of waterfowl migrating back to Saskatchewan.  At the beginning of the migrations season, the Canada geese usually arrive first.  The snow geese will follow as soon there are open water bodies large enough for their massive flocks to roost.  During the hunt you can expect to have your decoy spread buzzed by a wide variety of waterfowl including Specklebelly Geese, Canada Geese, Mallards and Pintails.  Your field guide will help remind you that these species are out of season during the Spring Snow Goose Hunt but that both Snow Geese and Ross’s Geese are in season.
