Bird Hunts

Overview:

Known as the Land of Living Skies for producing some of the countries most breath taking sunsets, stormy horizons and northern lights, its sky is also home to one of the largest duck populations on the continent. Thousands of “honkers” fill the sky with long V-formations; snow geese cover fields like freshly fallen snow, and sandhill cranes fill the air with distinctive rolling cries. As soon as the farmers start harvest massive fields of wheat, barley and peas in late August, geese congregate to consume feed in preparation for southern migration. The Saskatchewan prairie attracts every major species. Hosting over ten species of ducks and over five sub species of Canada geese ranging from Giant Greaters to small Cacklers, Snow Geese, Ross Geese, and Sandhill Cranes in staggering numbers.

Goose season remains open into December, but our peak hunting period is usually September & October in this province. Fall weather fluctuations can certainly alter the timing of staging and migration, but as long as roost water stays open and waste grain uncovered by snow, the waterfowl will be there to hunt. With our high bag limits and multiple species of waterfowl and in the centre of the migration, No Fly Zone Waterfowl Outfitters is like no other place in Canada to experience waterfowl hunting. Limits are generous. Hunters are allowed a daily limit of eight dark geese. The daily white goose limit is 20. Combined with a daily limit of eight ducks, and five Sandhill Cranes. Hunters that are set up in a hot field on these prairies can experience incredible shooting.

Sharp-tailed Grouse, Ruffed Grouse and Hungarian Partridge also call Saskatchewan home. Sharp-tailed Grouse daily limit of two, season limit of four. Hungarian Partridge offers a daily limit of four, season limit of eight. Ruffed Grouse daily limit of ten. There are specific dates for hunting upland game birds. Please let us know if this interests you so we can check dates. An upland bird license is mandatory when purchasing a waterfowl license.

Morning shoots are usually geese but it isn't uncommon for snow geese, Canada geese, specks, sandhill cranes and ducks to be in the same field. We use a combination of full bodied decoys, windsocks, spinning wing decoys, and electronic calls based on the hunters preference and what is required for a successful hunt.

We tailor your hunt to you, choose from layout blinds or A-frame blind to hunt from. We occasionally hunt over water but field hunts are our priority as water is their refuge. The weather plays a big part in how a hunt will go, warm, cold, or windy, everyday the weather is different. Hunting is the adaptation to any given situation to successfully harvest the game that you are after. Our guides and spotters are the most important component in providing our clients with a memorable waterfowl hunt. We are constantly checking the weather reports which gives us a good indication of what the birds will do in the days to come. Our spotters are out each day before sunrise covering thousands of miles throughout the week to ensure our clients with the best possible fields to hunt over. We spot until the birds go back to water so we can pattern the birds where you will be hunting.

All our hunts are pre-scouted so our guides can use their hunting knowledge to devise the best method to pursue the birds. With No Fly Zone's knowledge, teamwork and Saskatchewan's phenomenal waterfowl population, we provide you with an experience the best that waterfowl hunting has to offer.

We usually hunt in dry fields over decoys and like to get the birds in tight with their feet down. However we do hunt near or over some day ponds as well where our species list expands greatly with the healthy variety of ducks that migrate through our area. We stay away from roosts to make sure the waterfowl have a safe refuge and don’t get over pressured. If you love hunting ducks, you will love No Fly Zone.

Duck Hunting in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan is the fly way for many different duck species. Most of which travel through our area. Our main game target is obviously the puddle ducks on dry field hunts which primarily are mallard and pintail but also include wigeon, blue and green winged teal, gadwall, shoveler, and we even know where to go to try for wood ducks. We are in a very good location for duck hunting and have had great success with limit hunts starting September 1st right through until November.

As the season progresses the heads turn greener and the colours show up more obviously. By the end of October we are predominately shooting large greenheads in full plumage. Sometimes even in the snow!

Snow Goose Hunting in Saskatchewan

We have amazing opportunities for Snow Geese, Ross Geese, And blue geese. These birds come here in astonishing numbers and we have the right tools and knowledge to target these sometimes tricky birds.

If you’re wishing to target Snow Geese we would recommend Sept 4 - Oct 14 for the fall or join us in the spring hunt with reduced rates and a more relaxing pace during the last two weeks in April and first two weeks in may.

We get a discounted rate on our quality ammunition and we pass that onto our hunters. We have high bag limits of 20 snows, 8 dark geese, 8 ducks, and five cranes per day. We typically use 3” shells in 12 gauge. We can use electronic calls with snow geese along with other elaborate mechanical options depending on the dynamics or each hunt.

Canada Goose Hunting in Saskatchewan

With many local Greaters to start the season with a bang, and healthy numbers of migrating Canada’s every day, all season, we enjoy calling in Canada Geese. The true passion comes out when one of our expert guides gets behind the split reed to coax in our black-footed friends.

With every species of Canada goose available in numbers we love targeting these vocal birds in the morning until October 15th, after which hunting regulations allow us to hunt them all day long.

We have a strong spread of fully flocked Avian X full bodies that we like to mix with dive bomb silhouettes for depth. Come learn our tricks of the trade for what works best in Saskatchewan from September 1st until November.

Specklebelly Goose Hunting in Saskatchewan

We have strong numbers of Specklebelly’s and we seem to attract them equally to Snow Goose spreads, or Canada Goose spreads.

We don’t have a full Speckle Belly spread to specifically target the species but we harvest them most days a week no matter which other species we are targeting. Another fantastic eating bird.

Specklebellies are known as White-Fronted Geese in the hunting regulations, and are included in the 8 geese per day limit of dark geese (along with Canada geese).

While you might get fortunate and have a few cranes come in for a look at a Canada Goose decoy set up, and you might knock down a couple, a successful crane hunt requires the right decoy set up, in the right flight line, and hunters who are very well hidden. You likely wont find your guide bringing out their hunting dog on a planned sandhill crane hunt. These big birds have a 4 inch pointed beak that they will use to defend themselves if wounded.

Sandhill Crane Hunting in Saskatchewan

The Ribeye of the sky is Definitely a bucket list hunt! Guests that get to experience a lights out sandhill crane hunt have never been so excited. We are allowed a limit of five cranes per hunter and we know when those chances are good. The hunting is as fantastic as the eating as we will be sure to prepare you a meal with crane that will blow your mind. You might even be able to sneak the recipe from our head guide that cooks these to perfection. The best timing for crane hunting is before October 14 as they migrate sooner.

A sandhill crane hunt is absolutely an experience you won’t forget. These are big birds with wing spans over 6 feet and that means a lot of meat on the breast bone. The meat is darker and the texture is more like beef than other waterfowl. When the ribeye of the sky is on your plate, it is a waterfowl gourmet experience.

The call of a sandhill crane is distinct from any other waterfowl. You have to hear it to know what it sounds like, but then it can't be mistaken for any other species of waterfowl. These are very wary birds and it takes experience and knowledge to hunt them successfully.

Big Game Hunts

The big game area is over 200,000 acres of prime hunting land, making it one of the largest areas in Saskatchewan. This area was not be operated for many years and has world class trophy animals in their prime and beyond. We are excited to share this opportunity with you to harvest a true trophy-class animal.

Keeley lake has been running as a fishing lodge for the summer and winter months and is well known for the great fishing on the lake. Our goal is to keep this a small very well managed camp producing trophy class animals year after year. We aim to target the mature animals allowing our younger animals to get to full potential and we have incentives for our management goals .
